For some reason, Hollywood is adapting Sonic the Hedgehog into a film, with Westworld's James Marsden reportedly starring.

The film will be a live-action/animation hybrid with Oscar-nominated animator Jeff Fowler directing. Out November 2019, the film will mark the first time for Sonic to appear in the big screen ever since Sega released the first-ever game in the franchise back in 1991. The game series has sold 360 million copies to date, including both packaged and digital titles on consoles, tablets, and smartphones.

James Marsden Joins 'Sonic The Hedgehog' Cast

Though it's unclear what role he'll be playing, Marsden is perfect for the job, given that he already has experience with a film like this, having starred in 2011's Hop, also a live-action/animation hybrid.

Deadpool director Tim Miller will serve as executive producer alongside Toby Ascher. Dmitri Johnson, and Dan Jevons will be co-producing. Neal H. Moritz will serve as producer under his Original Film banner. The film is being produced by Paramount, which first acquired adaptation rights for Sonic in 2017.

Paul Rudd Reportedly Also Set To Star

Ant-Man actor Paul Rudd is being considered for a lead role in the film. A separate report from The Hashtag Show says he might play a human character named Tom, a policeman who teams up with Sonic, presumably to take down Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, the hedgehog's main archvillain throughout the series' history.

It should be noted that Rudd is still being eyed for the role, meaning it's not certain whether he'll actually play it. This is the only plot-related information about the film that has come out so far. Actual plot details remain limited, with speculation of Rudd and Sonic's team-up being the only guess so far as to what the film might be about.

There are still a number of characters from the series that could make their way into the film — Tails, Amy Rose, Espio, Shadow, and Knuckles are just some of the few names that come to mind. There's also no telling which other actors are going to star in the movie besides Marsden.

The film opens Nov. 15, 2019.
