Apple's iPhone X ranked as the world's best-selling smartphone in the first quarter of this year, meaning January to March, but the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus snatched this title in April.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus are the company's latest flagship smartphones, boasting top-notch specs, premium designs, and advanced features all around.

Galaxy S9 Plus Dethrones iPhone X In Global Sales

The Galaxy S9 Plus apparently proved to be a massive hit in April, ranking as the top-selling smartphone and outperforming even the hugely popular iPhone X. In fact, Apple's flagship slipped to the third position as the Galaxy S9 took the second place.

Counterpoint Research reports that the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus grabbed a 2.6 percent global market share each, with sales performances especially good in North America and the Asia-Pacific region. The iPhone X, meanwhile, seized a 2.3 percent market share in April.

"According to the latest research from Counterpoint's Market Pulse, Samsung's Galaxy S9 series became the best seller globally, pushing Apple's iPhone X to the third spot," notes the report. "The sales of Galaxy S9 series improved, driven by performance in APAC and NAM."

Samsung's flagship smartphone from last year, the Galaxy S8, is apparently still going strong worldwide, managing to seize the last position in the top 10 best-selling smartphones globally. The market research firm notes that the Galaxy S8's performance is mainly due to bundle deals and price cuts, which makes sense.

Apple Still Dominates The Top 10

Nevertheless, despite handing over the crown to Samsung, Apple still has three smartphones in the top 5: the iPhone X on third place, the iPhone 8 Plus on fourth, and the iPhone 8 on fifth. The iPhone 8 Plus grabbed the same 2.3 percent market share as the iPhone X, while the iPhone 8 seized 2.2 percent of global sales.

Moreover, Apple also took the seventh and ninth positions with iPhone 6 and iPhone 7, respectively. It means that half of the top 10 best-selling smartphones are iPhones.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi manages to sneak two handsets into the top 10 for the first time, with its Redmi 5A and Redmi 5 Plus/ Note 5 taking the sixth and eighth spots, respectively. Its performance is likely due to strong sales in India and China.

Samsung's smartphone sales, meanwhile, are expected to continue strong and get a notable boost later this summer when the Galaxy Note 9 makes its official debut.
