For a while, HBO has been saying that it's developing several potential spinoff series that'll air sometime after the eighth season of Game of Thrones wraps up — now it's saying that only one spinoff is going forward.

The premium cable network has shelved other Game of Thrones prequel projects in development, at least for now. Except for one: programming president Casey Bloys recently told reporters that it's going ahead with a prequel written by Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children scribe Jane Goldman, with an expected shooting date of early 2019.

Game Of Thrones Prequel Details Revealed

The story will take place "thousands of years" before the events in Game of Thrones and explore "the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour."

George R.R. Martin, the author of the material upon which Games of Thrones was based, has suggested "The Long Night" as the title for the prequel pilot, but Bloys didn't reveal any possible working titles for now. He also said that the 8,000 years between the prequel and the main series will give the show an opportunity to explore other stories and ultimately give it the chance to sculpt its own identity, especially since the kingdoms of Westeros didn't exist at the time.

"We're not trying to do Game of Thrones Part II. No one is going to duplicate what [GoT showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] did," says Bloys. "By setting it when we did, there's a lot going on, a lot of dynamics that are related to Game of Thrones, but it's different enough with its time period and characters its duplicative."

What Will Happen To The Other 'Game Of Thrones' Spinoffs?

HBO, at one point, had five different spinoff ideas in development. Bloys didn't say whether these are now dead, but it seems there is no movement on those projects so far.

"I don't imagine there will be any more activity on the prequels until we see how this goes. I'm not holding one back and we're going to make an announcement any time soon," says Bloys.

The cable network is now in search of a director plus a cast for the Goldman prequel. Goldman, Martin, Vince Gerardis, and Daniel Zelman will serve as executive producers.

Goldman has worked on projects including X-Men: First Class, the Kingsman films, and the offbeat superhero comedy Kick-Ass.
