The OnePlus 6T in-display fingerprint scanner has been confirmed, shortly after rumors surfaced that the technology will be featured in the upcoming smartphone.

The hype is now heating up for the next OnePlus smartphone, which is expected to be released as soon as next month. More information on OnePlus 6T features and specifications will likely pass through the rumor mill over the coming weeks, after the confirmation of the in-display fingerprint sensor.

OnePlus 6T Retail Box Leaked

An alleged OnePlus 6T retail box was recently uploaded in Chinese social media, and it hinted that the OnePlus 6 successor will be copying two important features from the Oppo R17, the new flagship device of OnePlus' sister company.

The first feature is the waterdrop notch, which reduces the size of the display feature made popular by the iPhone X, and the second feature is the in-display fingerprint scanner. The features were teased through the drawing of the OnePlus 6T design in the inner portion of the retail box's lid.

The leak was sketchy, as the source of the retail box could not be confirmed. However, the OnePlus 6T in-display fingerprint scanner has now been confirmed, increasing the chances that the waterdrop notch design is real too.

OnePlus 6T In-Display Fingerprint Scanner Confirmed By OnePlus

OnePlus confirmed to CNET that the OnePlus 6T will have an in-display fingerprint reader, which will make it the first OnePlus smartphone that will come with the technology.

It will not be the first smartphone with the security feature, as there are a handful of Vivo models and the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS that already offer it. However, it will be the first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner that will be widely available in the United States, beating the Samsung Galaxy S10 which is not expected to be unveiled until early next year.

OnePlus' version of the in-display fingerprint scanner will be called Screen Unlock, and it will be offered on the OnePlus 6T alongside the Face Unlock facial recognition system.

"We unlock our phones multiple times a day, and Screen Unlock reduces the number of steps to complete the action," said OnePlus in its email to CNET. "By adding this feature as an addition to other display unlocking options such as Face Unlock, users will have options to unlock the display in a way that is most efficient for them."

OnePlus admitted that the feature was originally meant to be rolled out for the OnePlus 5T. However, like Samsung, it decided to delay the launch of an in-display fingerprint scanner because the technology was not yet ready.
