Toyota is bringing back the Supra, its two-seater sports car, after 17 years with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine developed by BMW and brand-new features. 

The 2020 Toyota Supra was announced at Detroit Auto Show on Monday, Jan. 14.

The fifth-generation Supra has a 335-horsepower engine with BMW engineering technology and eight-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted with steering wheel-mounted paddles. 

It also has a 365 lb-ft of torque and could reach the speed of 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. The top speed only up to 155 mph, making it the fastest Toyota car to date. Its weight comes in at 3,397 pounds.

The sports car arrives in 3.0 edition and 3.0 Premium edition, with price starting at $50,920. The 3.0 Premium is priced at $54,920 that comes with a JBL 12-speaker audio system, a head-up display or HUD, and leather seats.

There is also a special Launch Edition priced at $56,180, which is limited to 1,500 cars with red leather interior and red accents outside. According to early reports, the new Supra was built in Austria by Magna Steyr.

 It is called the 2020 GR Supra in the United States and in a press release in Europe, the car's design is called "Condensed Extreme." It means that the focus of the design is on a short wheelbase, big wheels, a wider stance, and a long, low hood.

The latest version of Supra is tested by Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda on different racetracks including the challenging Nürburgring in Germany. Akio is a certified race car driver. 

"I think it reflects on his personality that this thing exists at all," said John Pearley Huffman of Toyoda.

Supra Car's Origin

The Supra got its name as a designation for a special high-performance version in the 1970s of the sporty Celica, the Celica Supra. It was developed later under its own name with a higher level of performance.

The fourth generation Supra developed in the 1990s is the most desirable by drivers today, with its innate speed and handling as well as its ability to accept modifications. Performance tuners could modify its engine to astronomical horsepower numbers.

In Japan, they have a 2.0-liter unit with a four-cylinder motor of the new Supra. Buyers can choose either a 255 HP or with 194 HP, and its weight is about 3,100 pounds. The pricing has not yet been announced.
