At the 2019 Mobile World Congress, Motorola has confirmed that it's going to release a foldable phone sometime in the foreseeable future, making it clear that it has "no intention of coming later than everybody else in the market."

Previous reports have already suggested before that the company is working on such a device, and this confirmation sets it in stone.

Motorola Foldable Phone

In an interview with Engadget, Dan Dery, Motorola's vice president of Global Product, shared more info regarding the company's progress with a foldable phone.

"We started to work on foldables a long time ago. And we have been doing a lot of iteration," he said.

The Design

According to Dery, Motorola's foldable phone isn't going to be the same as other similar devices revealed so far, such as the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X.

Speaking of the Mate X, the executive also touched on how fragile the bendable plastic screen is, which Huawei described as a "soft screen."

"It has a short life right away; it starts dying the day you unpack it," he said, regarding devices with a plastic display.

At that, Motorola doesn't plan on putting the display of its foldable device on the outside, which is a stark contrast to the Mate X. Instead, the final design could be something along the lines of what the company's recently filed patents revealed (pictured above).

Motorola's ambitions don't end there either. It's also looking into a device with a single screen and two hinges that could fold twice. That way, only one-third of the display will face outward when it's in phone mode.

Back in January, The Wall Street Journal reported that Motorola will bring back the RAZR branding in the form of a $1,500 smartphone with a folding display. It also said that the company will launch this device by the end of February, which obviously didn't pan out, but aside from that, the report aligns with the recently disclosed plans.
