Amazon wants to trim Prime shipping to just a day instead of two. The company revealed that it's working to offer free one-day shipping as the default option for all Prime customers instead of the two-day option that's currently in place.

"We're currently working on evolving Prime two-day to Prime one-day," according to CFO Brian Olsavsky during Amazon's Q1 2019 earnings call.

Amazon Prime To Switch To One-Day Shipping

One-day Prime shipping would be different from free same-day and free one-day shipping methods currently offered on the site, which usually require customers to order at least $35 worth of items. One-day Prime shipping won't incur an additional cost outside the required Prime membership subscription.

"We're already starting down this path," said Olsavsky, adding that Amazon has brought one-day shipping to more areas in the country. Still, enabling one-day Prime shipping "will take us a significant amount of time to achieve."

Olsavsky said Amazon had been working on improving its shipping logistics over the past quarter, and that it'll use the U.S. Postal Service in addition to all its other transportation partners to make one-day Prime shipping as the standard for all Prime members.

Amazon will share more details in the second quarter of the year. The company has yet to formally announce this new initiative, and Olsavsky failed to share an exact timeline of its nationwide availability.

One-day Prime shipping would be a boon both for customers and Amazon's business. It stands to drive increased revenue for product sales, for starters, and it'll definitely encourage more users to sign up for Prime. Olsavsky did not hint that Prime membership fees would climb as a result of this upgrade in shipping speed, and there's no mention of a minimum required purchase to avail the option.

Amazon Prime Perks

Amazon launched Prime in 2005 for $79 per year. One of its biggest parks is guaranteed two-day shipping for all orders. It's been 14 years, and the service has since accumulated a number of perks in addition to speedy shipping times. Prime memberships come with a subscription to Prime Video by default, for starters, home to Emmy-winning original shows such as Transparent. It also comes with unlimited digital storage, ad-free music streaming, Kindle rentals, and more.
