Bungie is making Destiny 2 free to play, calling it Destiny 2: New Light.

The game studio made the announcement alongside the unveiling of Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, the next expansion coming to the game.

In a blog post, Bungie outlined its plans for its shooter moving forward. The short version is, there aren't any plans for a Destiny 3 just yet, but the company's roadmap is coming with some welcome updates for new, current, and returning players, particularly the aforementioned free-to-play version and expansion, as well as the new Cross Save feature.

Destiny 2 Is Now Free

Called Destiny 2: New Light, it's coming with all year-one content. In other words, the base game of Destiny 2 is in the mix along with the first two expansions that rolled out (i.e., Curse of Osiris and Warmind). Players will also be able to access areas that came with Forsaken, but they'll have to purchase the expansion to play its campaign.

This free version of Destiny 2 is scheduled to become available on Sept. 17 for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.

Shadowkeep

The new expansion will see Guardians returning to the Moon where new Nightmares "have emerged from the shadows."

Bungie says that this will be a stand-alone expansion, allowing users to buy it and play straight away. That means they won't be required to own all previous Destiny 2 games and expansions before playing it.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep will be available on the same day as Destiny 2: New Light via Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Microsoft Store. It'll cost $34.99 for the standard version or $59.99 for the digital deluxe edition.

Cross Save

This feature is pretty straightforward. With this in place, players can access the same characters they own across platforms.

It's set to go live sometime this fall.

One last thing, Bungie is also putting an end to PS4-exclusive content, meaning all weapons, maps, and missions will be available to all players regardless of their platform.
