Samsung has started its mass production of 12Gb LPDDR5 next-generation mobile DRAM that will give a super-fast performance for its future 5G flagship smartphones.

The South Korean tech company announced on Thursday that the new LPDDR5 module could transfer at 5,500 Mbps, which is about 1.3 times faster than the 12Gb LPDDR4X memory that is used in today's high-end smartphones.

Mass-Produced 12Gb LPDDR5 Module

"With mass production of the 12Gb LPDDR5 built on Samsung's latest second-generation 10-nanometer (nm) class process, we are thrilled to be supporting the timely launch of 5G flagship smartphones for our customers worldwide," said Jung-bae Lee, executive vice president of DRAM Product & Technology for Samsung Electronics.

The LPDDR5 DRAM module is able to transfer 44GB of data, or about 12 full-HD or 3.7GB-sized movies in just 1 second. It could also use 30 percent less power compared to its predecessor LPDDR4X through combining a new circuit design with enhanced clocking, training, and low-powered features.

Samsung Galaxy 11 Could Be First To Use Next-Gen DRAM

The new mobile memory is also optimized for 5G and artificial intelligence. Thus, it would not be surprising if Samsung Galaxy S11 could be the first mobile phone to use this new technology when it comes out next year.

With the new 12Gb LPDDR5 DRAM modules at 5,500 Mb/s, users can look forward to having a super-fast smartphone in Samsung's upcoming flagship mobile devices.

The 8Gb LPDDR5 module was originally announced last year, promising a 6,400 Mb/s data transfer in 1 second, or 14 full-HD movies in just a second. It offers a "deep sleep mode" that reduces power usage, which is about half of the "idle mode" of the current LPDDR4X DRAM.

It was as well promised that the power consumption of the 8Gb LPDDR5 is reduced up to 30 percent compared to LPDDR4X DRAM. It's also UHD-compatible. However, this module was not mass-produced.
