Microsoft has started sending out invites for a special event to be held in New York City on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

While the company hasn't released details on the event, it will likely introduce a new range of hardware and software, potentially including a new highly anticipated dual-screen model as part of the brand's popular Surface lineup.

What To Expect In October

Interestingly, the upcoming event is set exactly a year after a similar event that saw Microsoft launch a number of Surface hardware, including the Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, Surface Studio 2, and Surface Headphones.

It's possible that Microsoft will unveil a new round of updates in the Surface collection during this year's event. Many of these products are due for an upgrade, such as the Surface Book, Surface Laptop, and Surface Pro.

New products could also be launched, such as a new highly anticipated dual-screen Surface device dubbed as Centaurus. Digital Trends noted that another major reveal could be a new version of Windows that is expected to power this specific device. This new and updated version is known as the Windows Core OS and it has reportedly been spotted in several listings on LinkedIn.

Is It Finally Time For Microsoft's Centaurus?

There have been buzz surrounding Microsoft's dual-screen Surface product for about two years, since Windows Central first reported about it in December 2018. The Surface Centaurus is expected to lead the charge and usher in a wave of dual-screen hybrids in the market, although it's unclear when the company is planning to launch it to the world.

Back in June, The Verge revealed that Microsoft held an internal all-hands event that included a demonstration of a dual-screen prototype alongside a new range of Surface devices. Sources said that employees even lined up just to catch a glimpse of the highly anticipated device.

The fact that the company already unveiled the Centaurus to its employees suggests that the product is nearly ready for its big reveal. Microsoft has given no clues on whether the Centaurus will be shown off in the October event, but it's possible that the company could provide more details on the development of the project and perhaps even a more concrete release date that fans can look forward to.

According to sources who talked to The Verge, Microsoft is currently looking at a 2020 launch for the upcoming dual-screen Surface.
