Hulu has given up on Google's Daydream View virtual reality headset. This week, the streaming service confirmed that it has disabled support for the platform from its mobile app.

Hulu Severs Ties With Google's Daydream VR

Hulu rolled out new updates that made it impossible for many Daydream users to use their VR headset to stream movies and television series.

While the streaming service did not announce that it has pulled its support of Daydream, its website confirmed that the newer versions of the app are no longer compatible with the Google device.

"The VR experience with Google Daydream is no longer supported for Android mobile devices running version 3.55 or newer of the Hulu app," notes Hulu's support page. "That said, it is still available on Daydream-capable Android devices running version 3.54.1 or older of the Hulu app."

A representative from Hulu also confirmed the change to Variety, which was first to break the news. However, they refused to offer additional comments. A spokesperson for Google also declined to issue a statement.

Hulu was one of the original partners of Daydream VR when it was launched back in 2016. The partnership offered a select number of 360-degree content as well as Hulu's entire catalog that users were able to enjoy in a virtual theater-type setting.

The streaming service's VR app still currently supports other headsets, including PlayStation VR, Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Go, and Oculus Rift.

Daydream's Future Uncertain

The Disney-owned streaming service is only the latest to drop support for Daydream VR. HBO also removed the platform from its HBO Now and HBO Go VR apps earlier this year. Like Hulu, HBO was one of Google Daydream's launch partners in 2016.

HTC, another launch partner, canceled a standalone Daydream VR headset it was planning to build with Google back in 2017. The company instead released its own VR platform.

Samsung, which added Daydream support to its handsets in 2017, dropped the platform from its latest releases.

Google's service, Play Movies & TV, pulled its support for Daydream VR this year while the budget smartphone Pixel 3a is not compatible with the headset.
