Apparently, a majority of Apple Watch users are first-time buyers, and not upgraders. Can the new Apple Watch Series 5 entice current users to upgrade their units?

Apple Watch Series 5

About 70 percent of Apple Watch users are evidently first-time buyers. This means that of the buyers, only about 30 percent were already users who chose to upgrade to the newer model. That is rather understandable because the Apple Watch is still relatively new compared to the iPhone and the iPad, and its design has not drastically changed since the first generation.

That said, there is no saying how the numbers will change with the Apple Watch Series 5. For one thing, buyers can now basically customize their units. With the Apple Watch Studio, users can choose the unit size, the case material they want, whether aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, or ceramic, and even the exact type of band they want.

More importantly, however, the Series 5 is also upgraded with features that may entice current users to upgrade. Features such as volume notification, heart rate tracking, and compass could grab users’ attention, but perhaps the most attractive is that the Series 5 has an always-on display. This means users will not have to wake their Apple Watch to see the time, something current users have to do with older units.

Gadget Update

It was only recently that survey results showed how people nowadays tend to keep their smartphones for much longer than they did in the past. In fact, the survey found that Americans now keep their phones for 32.9 months or almost three years. That is a significant increase in the replacement cycle compared to 2013 and 2014, when the replacement cycle time was under 20 months.

Obviously, the statistics might be different with smart watches, but it does show that consumers are becoming more conscientious about their gadget purchases. As for the Apple Watch Series 5, we will soon find out if the new upgrades will boost sales, both for first-time buyers and for current users.
