Mobile gamers will soon be able to play their League of Legends once the title makes its debut for iOS and Android devices next year.

Game developer Riot Games announced that a new version of LoL is headed to mobile devices and consoles in 2020.

Known as League of Legends: Wild Rift, the title will feature the same multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) gameplay that made the PC original famous. However, it will also come with a few tweaks to make the game more suited for the new platforms.

"Wild Rift is not a port of LoL on PC," Riot said.

"It is a new game built from scratch to ensure it is a polished, legitimate LoL experience that's worth players' time."

A Mobile Version Of 'League Of Legends'

Riot has yet to reveal more details about the upcoming League of Legends: Wild Rift. The only information that the company has made available so far is that the game will feature twin-stick control setup and brand new maps.

Wild Rift will also reportedly have shorter game matches compared to its PC version to help make them more conducive to mobile and console gaming.

Fans have been clamoring for a mobile version of League of Legends for years, but Riot didn't seem to be in a rush to release one until now.

Change In Fortunes

Since its launch back in 2009, LoL has enjoyed massive success in the gaming world. The title is even regarded by some observers as the most famous PC title around today. However, with mobile games starting to edge out PC games in terms of popularity, it's little wonder that Riot is finally giving in to its fan base's whims.

LoL is also facing stiff competition from other popular PC games, such as PUBG and Fortnite, which have been gaining widespread success of their own on other platforms. In fact, Fortnite reportedly earned $3 billion in 2018 alone.

In contrast, Riot saw its League of Legends revenue decline considerably 2018. The game only made $1.4 billion last year, which was a 21 percent drop year-over-year for the title.

Riot Games' parent company, Tencent, launched a similar MOBA game known as Arena of Valor in 2017. The game was a reworked version of the earlier Honor of Kings, which found massive popularity in China.

Tencent hoped to replicate Honor of Kings' success in the Asian market by introducing the game to Android and iOS users in Europe and the United States.
