In iOS 13, Apple introduced Optimized Battery Charging, a new feature that's designed to help iPhone users keep their batteries in tiptop shape.

As the company explains, it'll reduce the overall amount of time an iPhone stays fully charged, thus increasing its longevity. It uses machine learning to adapt to a user's charging habits and limit the charge up to 80 percent accordingly.

It should help the batteries maintain their health and performance and avoid degradation sooner than expected, but it won't exactly extend how long the handsets will keep the lights on throughout a day.

Whether that's going to be useful or not all boils down to the user, of course.

How To Turn On Optimized Battery Charging

If you're sold on the feature, just follow the instructions below to enable Optimized Battery Charging:

Step 1: Go to Settings.

Step 2: Tap on "Battery."

Step 3: Tap on "Battery Health."

Step 4: Toggle "Optimized Battery Charging" on.

Needless to say, to disable the feature, all you have to do is follow steps one to three, and instead of toggling it on in step four, toggle it off.

Compatible iPhones

Considering that Optimized Battery Charging is available only in iOS 13, only select iPhone models that support the OS can use it.

Besides the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max, the other devices that are compatible are the iPod touch (seventh generation), iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max.

Other iOS 13 features that are worth trying include the new system-wide dark mode and Low Data Mode for those who want to stretch out their cellular data plans, to name two.

It's worth mentioning that Apple was embroiled in a throttling issue back in 2017. The company was found out to be slowing down devices as their batteries degraded so that they wouldn't randomly shut down and such.

Even though it's already required by law to let its users know when it's going to throttle their devices, it's safe to say that the Cupertino brand aims to prevent battery degradation for as long as possible with Optimized Battery Charging.
