Samsung recently announced that it will soon launch a 50-megapixel camera that has faster autofocus. The company will also combine dual-pixel autofocus and tetracell pixel-binning for the first time.

According to The Verge's previous report, the new 50-megapixel camera sensor is called ISOCELL GN1. It will be Samsung's sensor that will include both tetracell pixel-binning and dual-pixel autofocus.

The company stated that the innovation will offer a combination of good low-light image quality and fast performance. According to Samsung Newsroom's previous report, the newly introduced ISOCELL GN1 will also have large 1.2μm-sized pixels, bringing a new level of performance by combining DSLR-level auto-focus speeds and elevated light sensitivity for stellar low-light photos that will be optimized for a more dynamic picture-taking experience.

"With innovative pixel technologies, Samsung has been at the forefront of offering high-performance image sensors that closely cater to increasingly diversifying market needs. The ISOCELL GN1 is part of that commitment to deliver stunning images to consumers in any environment," said Yongin Park, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics.

"We will continue to introduce image sensor solutions at the cutting-edge that will lead the next trends in mobile photography," he added.

Samsung combines dual-pixel and tetracell pixel-binning for the first time: the 50-megapixel camera will have faster autofocus

With the development of different smartphones, creating sharp images is an important element for those who are well accustomed to visually grasping and cherishing special moments using their smartphones. Most smartphone manufacturers put more emphasis on extremely detailed images with ultra-resolutions to address different preferences of users.

On the other hand, some developers choose to focus on bright results in the low-light environment by developing bigger pixels. These multiple needs can be performed by Samsung's new ISOCELL GN1 through its tetracell and Dual Pixel technologies. The GN1 has 100 million phase-detection auto-focus (PDAF) agents which brings the best-in-class auto-focusing.

A single pixel that can receive light from different angles for phase detection will have two photodiodes side-by-side. This will be made possible by the Dual Pixel technology of Samsung.

The GN1 can detect and focus onto a desired still or even a moving subject from every corner in an instant--even in low-light conditions using all the sensor's active pixels working as auto-focusing agents.

When an individual captures an image using GN1, the system will merge the outputs from the two photodiodes within the pixel, creating a single-pixel result. The GN1 will also have Smart-ISO that will provide the camera the feature of selecting the optimal ISO.
