Coronavirus has killed more than 350,000, with nearly 6 million cases infections around the world. Apparently, not only family members are devastated with COVID-19 deaths of their loved ones, but even their pets.

Modern Hachiko: Wuhan dog waited for his master

Daily Mail UK reported this week about the story of a dedicated dog that waited for his owner outside Wuhan hospital for three months.

The dog named Xiao Bao (Little Treasure) is a male mongrel from the Wuhan district. Reports said that Xiao Bao and his elderly owner arrived at Wuhan hospital in the middle of the Wuhan outbreak in February.

Since dogs are not allowed to enter the building, Xiao Bao remained outside of the hospital, waiting for his owner to come back. After five days, the elderly owner died in the hospital after acquiring coronavirus.

The dog, unaware by the death of his owner, stayed outside the hospital building for more than three months. The staff inside the hospital tried to shoo away the dog, but Xiao Bao still remained to sit quietly outside the building. Luckily, the passersby and a few of the nurses and staff from the hospital give some food for the dog as he remained outside.

On Apr. 13, when the lockdown was lifted in Wuhan, the owner of the supermarket near the hospital took care of Xiao Bao.

"They told me Xiao Bao's owner, a pensioner, was admitted with the coronavirus. Then he passed away, but Xiao Bao didn't know and just stayed in the hospital looking for him. It never left the hospital. It was incredibly touching and so loyal. I grew familiar with the dog and later brought him into the shop," said shopkeeper Wu Cuifen. "Every morning when I opened up, Xiao Bao would be there waiting for me. He saw me off at the end of each day."

Despite this, Xiao Bao still resists going away from the hospital. Wu said that even they deliberately tried to drive far away from the hospital, the dog still gets its way unto the building.

Xiao Bao was transferred to an Animal Protection area

Unfortunately, after Xiao Bao still finds a way to get back outside the hospital to look for his deceased owner, staff, and nurses from the hospital complained about the Wuhan Small Animal Protection Association to finally get him.

Reports said that Xiao Bao was treated by a veterinarian inside the facility and was taken care of by experts to prepare him to be transferred to another home.
