The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled another hand sanitizer after its manufacturer issues voluntary recall due to a potential presence of undeclared methanol or wood alcohol.
According to Newsweek, ITECH 361 issued a voluntary nationwide recall over nearly 19,000 one-liter bottles of All Clean Hand Sanitizer, Moisturizer, and Disinfectant.
Last month, the FDA advised the public to use nine sanitizers, which are deemed toxic, including the All Clean Hand Sanitizer from the same company. Now, the All Clean Hand Sanitizer, Moisturizer, and Disinfectant is being recalled voluntarily by the manufacturer for "potentially containing methanol."
Substantial exposure to methanol can result in headaches, nausea, permanent blindness, blurred vision, vomiting, coma, seizures, permanent damage to the nervous system, and even death.
All persons who use these products are at risk, but children who accidentally swallow these products are most at risk for methanol poisoning. However, the FDA and ITECH 361 have not yet received reports of adverse results of this recall.
According to the FDA statement published on its website on Monday, July 6, ITECH 361 voluntarily recalled 18,940 one-liter bottles of All Clean Hand Sanitizer, Moisturizer, and Disinfectant for potential methanol presence.
All Clean Hand Sanitizer and Moisturizer with UPC Code 628055370130 was distributed across the country to wholesale distributors and retailers.
FDA-recalled 15 sanitizers
The recent announcement followed the FDA's recall of 14 hand sanitizer products. In June, the FDA advised the public to use nine Mexico-manufactured hand sanitizers, including ITECH 361's All-Clean Hand Sanitizer.
Also in the first FDA list of toxic sanitizers were CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75 percent Alcohol, Esk Biochem Hand Sanitizer, The Good Gel Antibacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer, Lavar 70 Gel Hand Sanitizer, NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80 percent Alcohol, Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer, CleanCare, CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol, and CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol.
Also, the FDA added five more hand sanitizer products to its recalled list earlier this week. These include Soluciones Cosmeticas' Bersih Hand Sanitizer Gel Fragrance-Free, Grupo Insoma's Hand sanitizer Gel Unscented 70% Alcohol, Transliquid Technologies' Mystic Shield Protection Topical Solution, Tropicosmeticos' Britz Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 70%, and Soluciones Cosmeticas' Antiseptic Alcohol 70% Topical Solution hand sanitizer. Like the first nine recalled products, the FDA also found methanol in all five hand sanitizers.
According to the FDA, consumers should "stop using these hand sanitizers and dispose of them immediately inappropriate hazardous waste containers." The agency also advised the public not to "flush or pour these products down the drain."
Meanwhile, the FDA also advised consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizers with methanol to immediately seek medical treatment. This is vital for the "potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning."
During the coronavirus pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended frequent hand washing with soap and water, which reduces the amounts of germs and chemicals on hands. Alternatively, the public may use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol to help prevent "getting sick and spread germs to others."
