Logos aren't just fancy icons put on top of merch that are made to sound nice. They are symbols or designs that an organisation uses to identify its products. It's an expression of the company's brand promise, and needs to be recognisable enough to make the business stand out  - or at least be different enough from other businesses. It's the first thing that clients notice, so what it conveys needs to be clear and understandable. Logos are so much more than what you just see.

But how exactly do you match your brand with your logo? Here's some great tips, and even a website, that we have to help you get the best logo for your business.

Understand your business

This may seem like an obvious one, but this one's key to getting the best logo. Logo does not mean brand. It's so much more than that. You need to do the work to understand your business - what defines you, what you stand for, and what you want people to feel when they look at your company. You may think you already know your company well enough, particularly if you created it, but getting the logo requires deep thought on your whole brand. Answering these questions is just the start. Once you have your general ideas written down, then you can create a visual representation much more easily.

Focus on your business' niche

If you aren't familiar with the definition of a niche, it's a focused area of a broader market that you specialise in: it's your element in that business area. You should work on creating an idea that focuses on that niche, appealing to your target audience in completely the right way, and delivering a message for just them, so that they feel as though you will be able to meet all needs. You should be able to reflect your solution for them, which is your business offering, so it makes perfect sense for them.

Keep it relevant to all times

It's important to keep your company name broad. While you do want to have a specific name that reflects perfectly exactly what you are offering, you also want to keep the name broad because businesses are always evolving, and so is the market. You might find that if you're too specific, in the future it could harm your company as it's not what consumers think they want anymore - or you might have to end up changing your name, which could hurt your business. For instance, in 2007 Apple Computers changed their name to Apple Inc. as sales of iPhones and iPods picked up. You need a name that will work all the time.

Don't forget about SEO

If you're unfamiliar with what SEO is, it stands for Search Engine Optimisation, which is the process of growing the quality and the quantity of website traffic, by increasing the visibility of a webpage to users of a web search engine. In this day and age having an online presence is a very important thing to have - it can help your business reach so many more people and bring in the clients you would have never gotten otherwise.

Having a good company name and logo helps a brand stand out. And when you find the right logo, be careful not to start using it straight away. Make sure you consider the SEO implications - is your name common? Is your name basic? When you have an original name it'll be much easier to rank higher and come up on top, bringing in more business for you.

Make and test different brand versions

It's a good idea to have more than one logo to test out, and various focus groups to test which branding your target audience is most attracted to. Don't just test this by seeing their faces: ask specific follow-up questions to. Find out what it is that attracted each of them, what it made them feel like, and the emotion behind the attraction. Use the insights in order to help you boost your logo by making improvements, focusing in on the good parts.
