If you have an important file inside the Google Drive trash tab,  this is the time to check or retrieve it. As per the cloud storage platform, starting on October 13, all files in the Google Drive trash will no longer be saved after a duration of 30 days. It is advisable to check your emails now.

Can you retrieve files from your Google Drive trash?

Google Drive is one of the handiest tools of the platform, operating in so many years now.

Amid pandemic, this tool has been helpful to save documents, presentations, and other office docs. But not all the time, Drive has a lot of storage space for us.

You need to delete some of the files you have now and retrieve it later once you need it again. Unfortunately, this will soon change.

According to Google Drive, starting Oct. 13, all files labeled under 'trash' items in the platform will be automatically deleted after 30 days.

Before, users have the choice to not delete these files despite putting it under the trash tab. It can be retained indefinitely until the user emptied the trash.

But starting Oct. 13, this policy will change. All files that will be put in the 'trash' tab on the said date will be given a 30-day expiration date before Google Drive starts to delete all files under it automatically.

As explained by Google, this action will make sure that the platform will delete files that users are expected to be deleted.

"This change matches the policies of other G Suite products and services, such as Gmail. This will help ensure behavior is consistent and predictable for users across G Suite products and will help make sure that items users trash are actually deleted as expected," said on the press release.

In-app notification for users

To ensure that each user knows this new policy, Google Drive will show a banner, including details of the changes. As a warning to all, Google will have no liability once the user argued of not reading the said announcement.

Starting Sept. 29, Google will be showing in-app notifications in Drive and other Google products.

How to recover files from Google Drive?

Since we still have few weeks before the said Oct. 13 deadline, here are the steps to easily retrieve your files in Drive that you may have accidentally deleted.

  1. On a computer, go to drive.google.com/drive/trash.
  2. Right-click the file you want to recover.
  3. Click Restore.

Tip: If someone else created the file, they can delete, rename, and restore it. Contact the person who created the file and ask them to restore it or share it with you again.
