The year 2020 brought the world the fearsome pandemic that threatens all human beings' health and life from the SARS-CoV 2 virus, famously known as the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19. As the year nears its end, 2020's aftermath will soon be conveyed by every smartphone keyboards through emojis, the characters that boost reactions within a text or chat message.

COVID-19 indeed made a significant impact on everyone's life, may they be studying or working in different statures in life. Many people show dismay and negative feelings against the coronavirus, which has disturbed the way of life and even claimed lives.

A new series of emoji additions will grace 2021 and will soon be included in all smartphones in the world, to convey the aftermath brought by the events of 2020, centering on the global pandemic. Emojis are a part of the new generation's messaging life due to the convenience it brings to show the sender's different emotions to the receiver.

According to Emojipedia, the emoji reference website, there are 217 more additions to the massive number of emojis present on the smartphone and new avatars for the Emoji 13.1. The Unicode Consortium is the organization that creates and develops emojis, recently shared its latest addition.

The year 2021 will face a new chapter in everyone's lives, including new emojis that will let them express their experiences and feelings regarding 2020. Mending Heart, Spiral Eyes, Burning Heart, and even Gender-neutral Quarantine Beards will soon be added to the list of new emojis.

2021's New Emojis

There's a saying that goes: "New Year, New Beginnings." Seemingly this will be changed to something else this coming 2021 to: "New Year, New Beginnings, and New Emojis." 2021's new emojis will mostly feature 210 new skin tone features, gender fluid characters with beards, and kissing, along with several inhuman characters to express emotions.

One of 2020s most significant changes to the public, the difference in hairstyle and facial hair, results from the lockdown and restrictions that happened after the COVID-19 outbreak. The new emojis will let people flaunt their quarantine beards even without having to take a photo. Unicode Consortium even went as far as giving women emojis beard in different skin colors, including the original yellow.

  • Spiral Eyes

The 'Spiral Eyes' will be more of an update than an addition. Several devices have seen the 'Spiral Eyes' before, but some get the 'X' marked eyes instead. Emoji 13.1 will fix this problem and give everyone the spiral eyes.

Face with clouds is a new addition from the developers and will portray the cloudy feelings experienced during the lockdown. According to Daily Mail, this is said to be symbolic and will represent the feeling of ambiguity, confusion, and maybe even bliss. 

  • Face Exhale

The 'Face Exhale' emoji will appear more like a 'sigh' and portray the tiredness and heavy feeling each people experienced during the coronavirus lockdown. This new emoji will also apply to the exhalation of smoke.

The emojis creators slowly integrated the LGBTQ++ community on its characters to promote the awareness and inclusion of the community into society. Unicode Consortium announces 'love on all figures,' a statement which the community often claims.

  • 210 New Skin Tones

Unicode Consortium is also making a stand and awareness of racial profiling and discrimination with the inclusion of different colored skin tones in the emoji database. The fight against racial discrimination, including the most prominent 'Black Lives Matter,' will soon be broadened with the 210 new skin tones.

Mending Heart will be a new symbol for 2020 and healing from the Novel Coronavirus's adverse effects. This emoji will symbolize everyone's reparations and efforts in stemming from the transmission and spread of COVID-19.

  • Heart on Fire

Heart on Fire or Blazing Heart will be a new addition from Unicode Consortium, primarily focusing on the fire or will to carry on and fight another day.

These emojis are just a few of Unicode Consortium's more than 200 inclusion for the Emoji 13.1 2021 update and release.
