According to Screen Rant, the recent rumors of the MCU's Spider-Man 3 will feature a "Spider-Verse" consisting of the previous Peter Parkers in cinematic history. The public surely grasped on to the idea of a crossover as large as this, making the rumors spread virally on social media and trends.

Sony Pictures clarified with ET Canada that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would not return to the box-office to reprise their roles as Spider-Men, alongside Tom Holland's. A representative from the company told the news agency that the "rumored" castings are not confirmed.

Tobey Maguire portrayed the first Spider-Man on the silver screen, under Sam Raimi's direction and the trilogy that went from 2002 to 2007. On the other hand, Andrew Garfield succeeded Maguire, portraying Peter Parker in Sony's two-movie series of "The Amazing Spider-Man." There would have been a third installation for Garfield's portrayal; however, the second film did not fare well at the box office.

How did the "Spider-Verse" rumors start?

The rumors started because of the recent recasting of a Spider-Man movie villain, Electro, played by singer-actor Jamie Foxx, in 2014's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." The baddie went against Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker and was a short-lived character that disappeared as Spider-Man defeated him.

According to Screen Rant, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will bring back the recurring Spidey villain, Max Dillon, a.k.a Electro, famous in the comic books. MCU also cast Benedict Cumberbatch, reprising his role as the Sorcerer Supreme, which can also control time. These two additions are the root of the "Spider-Verse" theories from fans and speculators.

Electro is also known to make up the classic "Sinister Six" line-up and Mysterio, The Vulture, The Sandman, Doctor Octopus, and Kraven the Hunter. The Vulture and Mysterio already made their appearance the main villains of the first two Spider-Man films in the MCU, massively hinting at the Sinister Six's future team-up.

Would a "Spider-Verse" be possible?

The Sony Pictures representative that confirmed the news told the agency that the rumors are not verified, not denying the possibility altogether. The clarification did not entirely shut down the chance of the "Spider-Verse" to happen in the future.

However, Tom Holland's Spider-Man on the MCU would need to focus on Earthly and present villains.
