If you were trying to fire up a YouTube video and run into problems earlier: don't panic. It's not just you. For some at the moment, YouTube playback was down, with generalized anecdotal accounts and a spike over at DownDetector. The dilemma has now, though, been fixed, and YouTube is officially backed up.

During the blackout, both the GSuite Status dashboard and Google Cloud status dashboard report orange. But a quick check on Twitter or Facebook shows widespread reports of issues.

Reports, including ISPs, will bleed through to other programs that are not directly affected. Other sites may well have been affected by the disruption.

However, combining more organic reports suggested that it was restricted to YouTube and similar services, apparently including YouTube TV and YouTube Songs, while it also affected the Play Store.

Reports were common and did not seem to be confined to any one country or industry. YouTube's search and browser still operated on many sites, but attempting video replay actually stalled trying to load or threw an error.

Some people found a handful of other non-Google service outages, including regional power and some smart devices, through sifting through news. Still, it is not obvious whether they were connected.

TeamYouTube acknowledged the issue. They added they rolled out a patch to fix the issue. A Google representative referred us to the above tweet upon request for clarification. To keep track of the problem 's development, Google also posted a YouTube Support forum.

As early as 8:30PM ET, stuff appeared to be back, but you may have hit a pair of quirks. Videos played on YouTube's platform at that stage appeared to be functioning as they usually do. Some users noticed a couple error messages on the mobile app, but those will clear up with a restart. At that time, YouTube TV operated on mobile for some also 'forced close' the application.

What the error message is all about

YouTube started displaying an error message, stating that "An error occurred (Playback ID: [a unique alphanumeric string goes here])"

It is unknown what was the root cause of the issue, since the YouTube comment above is ambiguous. During the beginning of prime watching time in the US, the outage has also arisen and has created large volumes of social media complaints.

Google had a much more severe disruption earlier this year, according to Android Police. The disruption affected several sites, including Gmail, Drive, and Nest, mirroring a similar problem in March. In September, there was also a more moderate blackout involving Drive, and two more outages of Nest happened back in April and March. In brief, it's been a tough year for uptime for Google.
