According to 9gag, this is the first time that YouTube's popular recap video, which started way back in 2010, will not take place. This tradition has become a staple of YouTube's culture, even if people are just using the opportunity to dump their own videos.

For the past few years, the creator community treat the Rewind event as a joke, becoming the most disliked video of all time back in 2018.

But, there's no doubt that it is better compared to YouTube's 2019 recap video, which was mashup footage presented as a montage.

Why YouTube cancelled Rewind 2020?

Vulture explained that the giant video platform cancelled the annual event because the year 2020 is full of negative happenings.

A man walks past a billboard advertisement for YouTube on October 5, 2018 in Berlin, Germany. YouTube has established itself as the biggest global platform for online video presentations.

"Since 2010, we've ended the year with Rewind; a look back at the year's most impactful creators, videos, and trends," said YouTube via Vulture.

"Whether you love it - or only remember 2018 - Rewind was always meant to be a celebration of you," added YT.

However, the company said that 2020 is very different. It cancelled the annual event because it doesn't feel right to post the video as if this year is a normal one.

Because of the pandemic, and other problems, YouTube said that it will be taking a break from the Rewind.

People's thoughts about YouTube's decision are divided

Although YouTube's 2018 Rewind became one of the most disliked content, some people were not happy about the cancelled annual event. There are also some people that don't care if 2020 Rewind will happen or not.

A Twitter user under the name JerryRigEverything said that he disagrees with YT's decision. He explained that although 2020 is not good, the company should still do the 2020 Rewind since there are also positive things that happened.

Meanwhile, Twitter user @Dream said that it is the worst thing that happened. However, another commentator said that they don't care if the annual event takes place or not.
