Have you ever wondered what your relationship with people would be like without tech? No internet and no smartphones. Would you even have met your current partner? Or would you even know the people you're currently friends with?

According to the Pew Research Centre

  • 10% of internet users who are married or partnered say that the internet has had a "major impact" on their relationship, and 17% say that it has had a "minor impact." Fully 72% of married or committed online adults said the internet has "no real impact at all" on their partnership.

  • 74% of the adult internet users who report that the internet had an impact on their marriage or partnership say the impact was positive. Still, 20% said the impact was mostly negative, and 4% said it was both good and bad.

Now more than at any time in human history, technology has played a grand role or influence on who we hang out with.

Many swear by the teeth that technology does nothing but ruin relationships. And they're right at least to an extent.

Think about the last time you ate dinner with your family or friends. Remember how everyone was focused on their mobile phones instead of the food in front of them? Or how everyone failed to connect simply because they were on Instagram, Youtube, or Twitter? Maybe you're even part of the guilty party.

So, the question remains: How can you use technology to improve your relationships?

Let us find out.

The Good Side of Tech: How it could Improve your Relationship

Create online-shared activities

If you can order food with your smartphone, then you can also find activities that you and your partner can enjoy together online.

This could be as simple as taking things you would normally do offline, online.

Do you have a bucket list you want to completer? You could share it with your partner and giggle with excitement as you cross each item off the list.

You don't have to be a coder or website developer to create an online bucket list. You could use a simple Google doc that only you and your partner have access to.

Away from shared bucket lists, you can sync each other's calendars.

Now depending on the relationship stage, you're in with your partner or the level of trust amongst yourself, you could create shared calendars.

These calendars help you know what activities your partner has for the day. Instead of using it as a policing tool, it would work great to plan activities when you both have free time.

Make use of video

Unless you're already living with your partner, you might not be able to see them face-to-face thanks to COVID.

The next best thing to real-life communication is a video call. And there is no shortage of video calling software you can use for your business. Various video instant messaging apps serve different purposes from which you and your partner can choose from.

They include fun video conferencing software like Clubhouse that allows you to enjoy virtual communications with your partner or friends.

On these video calls, you could play games or engage in activities that can help you spice up the relationship like showing your partner your view, or what you're doing at the moment.

1. Text

Texting is not dead, and it is one of the biggest advantages of technology you can leverage to improve your relationship.

Not everyone would have the time for video calls or phone calls. And that is where texts shine.

Texts don't have to be back and forth conversations. It could be as simple as sending a thoughtful message that your partner would wake up to. Or a romantic message in the middle of the day that makes your partner think of you all day.

2. Send pictures

We all love pictures. Why else are we on Instagram? Sending pictures to your partner can help improve the state of your relationship - especially when you send sensual ones.

3. Use online counseling services

Today you don't have to go to a therapist's office if you need help in your relationship.

Technology has made it so easy that you can now fix the patches in your relationship through online relationship counseling. Regain is an example of a company that offers this service.

Things to note while using technology to improve your relationship

Backup your computer information

Perhaps this time is a good time to organize, sort, and categorize the information and files you have on your computer.

This will undoubtedly save you time when looking for your favorite photos with your partner.

It is key that you can hierarchize the information in folders and remove from the main screen those shortcuts to applications that you do not use. Back up your data to an external drive or cloud because if your computer breaks down right now, it may be more difficult to get parts or a fix.

Pay attention to security on your devices

Review and protect all the information you have on the web.

Cyberattacks are common lately. Therefore, it makes sense to better review and protect all the information you have on the web. And a recommendation is to check your passwords.

According to the FBI, the longer the sentence, the easier it is to remember and the more difficult to hack. And the safest option is a succession of words without any type of relationship between them.

Another good option is to use a double factor authentication, which can generally be through a call, a text message, or the use of another application.

Remove the applications that you do not use or use very little

Mainly on your mobile, it is a good time to debug little-used applications. They take up space and memory, which can make your phone run slower than usual.

It is also a good option to make a backup of multimedia files and, like on the PC, save them in an external memory or the cloud.
