Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk predicts that humans can be on Mars by 2026, despite NASA's plan to return to the moon in 2024.

On December 1, Musk spoke at an awards ceremony from Axel Springer. He said that he expects astronauts to land on Mars in 4 to 6 years time and added that he is confident in the timeline.

Landing on Mars

SpaceX and Tesla CEO said that the Earth-Mars synchronization happens every 26 months, the synchronization happened this year during the summer and that means in two years, there will be another event. His target year is 2026 but if space agencies and massive companies are lucky, humans can go to Mars in 2024.

In October 2020, Musk said that he thought the first mission to Mars of SpaceX could happen by 2024 but he eventually added that the timeline was just a guess.

The 49-year-old billionaire was asked when his first trip to orbit would happen and he said it might happen in the two or three years.

Musk told Mathias Dopfner, the CEO of Axel Springer SE, that he is concerned with creating the technology that can enable people to go to Mars and to make it habitable. He wants to create a city on Mars and have a base on the Moon.

Musk added that it is important to have a self-sustaining city on Mars as soon as possible. He is still optimistic about life on Earth but wants "life insurance" for life as a whole, providing other habitable plants.

At the Axel Springer conference, Musk opened up about his COVID-19 diagnosis and confirmed what people suspected when he was absent from the SpaceX launch last month.

Living in glass domes

In 2015, the Tesla CEO talked about putting a habitable city on Mars after the successful rocket landing by SpaceX. Meanwhile NASA's goal is to send men on a mission to Mars in 2030.

In 2016, Musk talked about how he can put human life on Mars. The CEO said that in order for humans to be able to survive in Mars, they should live in glass domes at first with all of the basic necessities that humans need to live.

Elon posted on his Twitter account that eventually, Mars could be terraformed to support life, just like Earth. The whole process would be too slow for people to witness it in our lifetime but it is important that a base is made on the Red Planet sometime soon so future civilization will be impressed on how humans got that far.

In June 2017, Musk published a paper, posted on Liebert, about making humanity a type of species that can live in more than just one planet and he laid out plans for having around a million people on Mars.

In 2018, the billionaire said that there was a 70% chance that he would move to Mars as well, but there are still a lot of studies and experiments that needs to be done because there is also a massive chance that people will die on the way to Mars.
