On February 3, IBM announced that they will make improvements to their quantum computing software and they expect that the adjustment will help increase the performance of its complex machines by at least a factor of 100, a type of development that creates on Big Blue's progress in making the advanced computing hardware.

IBM to update quantum computing software

In a road map shown by IBM, the computing giant targeted the release of quantum computing applications over the next two years that will tackle majority of its challenges such as artificial intelligence and complex and difficult financial calculations.

The update is opening up to lower level programming access that IBM expects that it will lead to a better foundation for those type of applications.

Much of the software will be written by using open-source technology that outsiders can contribute to and benefit from, IBM stated that in a statement, adding the improvements will then lead to a 100x speedup.

IBM's planned quantum computing software releases are a part of an effort to hide away as much of the quantum computing complexity as much as possible for ordinary people.

Getting a quantum computer to do useful work recently is a bit tricky, even with specialists like Cambridge Quantum Computing and Zapata Computing helping out.

The quantum computing software can help speedup the machines, which means it could speedup the jobs that took months on a classical computer could be done in just a few hours.

This change could help bring quantum computers closer to its goal of solving issues that are usually out of reach of classical machines.

IBM is among the group like Intel, Google, Microsoft, Rigetti Computing, IonQ and Honeywell racing for leadership in quantum computing, according to ITPro UK.

Quantum computers can employ a massive variety of approaches where classical computing technology is usually settled. It is not yet clear which among the companies will lead in the end as the technology switches from research labs into real-world use.

At the core of quantum computers are qubits, processing elements and data storage that can store a combination of one and zero.

Quantum computers connect qubits through a quantum physics phenomenon called entanglement that lets a machine encompass a massive number of possible solutions to an existing problem, according to Prowell Tech.

Operating a quantum computer involves applying a series of manipulations that are called gates to the qubits. With a specific sequence of gates, called a circuit, quantum computers can perform numerous computations for particular tasks like simulating molecules or optimizing parts purchases, which BMW is trying on its supply chain.

In the next few years, IBM expects to add more modules and services that will make the chores easier to accomplish. At the lower level, it will offer steady improvements in circuit technology through 2026.

IBM is currently working on increasing the number of qubits in its quantum computers. IBM is expected to investigate a key quantum computing technology in 2024 called the error correction that could make qubits much more stable, according to the company.
