In January 2021, "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" video game expert joedun became the first person to ever complete a 100% speedrun without any damage at all. Although that record itself is impressive, the road there was grueling.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild speedrun

A 100% speedrun means everything to video gamers. Players will need to beat the game but they will also need to collect all container upgrades, finish the adventure log and find all of the 900 Korok seeds, get all of the key items and fully upgrade every permanent weapon and armor, along with standard things, like beating every single shrine.

Players will also need to do all of that without taking a single hit to the health points. In a game where it is extremely easy to hurt yourself just trying to stasis a random object into the air, such a challenge might sound impossible.

The feat did sound impossible for a while. In an exclusive interview with Polygon, Joedun stated that it took him months of failed tried just to get his first official clear. When he finally completed it, his chat erupted in a sea of "EZ Clap" messages.

Joedun's journey

Joedun said that the most challenging aspect was never giving up as he failed the run more than 100 plus times, with 3 of those times being more than 30 hours in. In order to keep pushing himself to not give up and to not let the game beat him was the hardest.

Joedun recalled that after 33 hours into an attempt, he was trying to get dragon pieces from Farosh and the farming area is full of Chu Chus, which drop jellies after being killed.

The jellies can become charged with an element. Joedun defeated the Chu Chu just fine, but then he went into a cave with Electric Keese in it.

Joedun stated that some of the Keese started chasing him and it was not a big deal as he just shoot them and he carried on. He added that it just so happens that when shooting at them, they were hovering over the jelly, which then changes to electric jelly.

As soon as Joedun killed the Keese, the BOTW laws triggered the jelly to send an electric arc, which then connects to his arrow, then to his bow, and eventually to his Link. He lost a quarter of a heart, but that is all that it takes to get disqualified. He then had to go back to square one.

Joedun is not the first player to attempt the challenge. He picked it up after other runners had a try at it. He hopes that now that he had set the record of 31 hours, 58 minutes and 9 seconds, someone will contest him for the spot.

However, Joedun said he will not wait for that to happen and instead is already planning to use more grueling versions of the speedrun. He will try it again with The Masters Trials downloadable content installed, which is more difficult than the base game.
