Spotify is stepping up into the big leagues and it would soon be streaming with lossless, "CD Quality" music that would be a treat for all Audiophiles who prefer the highest quality of music listening experience. This feature was initially introduced by TIDAL in 2015 and brought the listening experience to the next level.

However, this would be the first time Spotify is debuting this, despite the company's audio quality already bordering on the highest quality MP3 audio codec that has 320 kbps of bitrate for its playback already. Most often than not, MP3 with 320 kbps is often matched up against FLAC, the top quality lossless music codec format.

It is said that Spotify's 320 kbps MP3 is already on par with FLAC, and without the proper equipment, not much of a difference would be heard from both and are comparable with each other. A lot of Audiophiles would beg to differ with the claim, and debate that lossless is still the best quality there is, but Spotify is aiming to bring lossless-like to streaming.

Spotify HiFi: Coming Soon for Lossless Audio Streaming

FLAC is extracted directly from CDs that contain music albums from its rightful sellers and artists who made the album. Audiophiles have always been respectful of these copyrights and avoid pirating lossless audio formats, and aim to copy the music from bought album CDs that come out as FLAC formats.

Spotify is aiming to do the same thing with Spotify HiFi, which would soon stream FLAC lossless audio format within its network, resembling TIDAL HiFi which launched last 2015. According to Ecoustics, Spotify HiFi is slated to release anytime in the latter half of 2021, bringing the new format of music listening experience accessible to patrons.

FLAC is massive in size, and saving it to one's phone can easily eat up storage. Spotify has stuck with the best MP3 quality there is, and that is 320 kbps, opposing TIDAL HiFi's FLAC music streaming. However, it seems that the company is taking the turn for the better and bringing Audiophiles a treat, extending the niche to Spotify's music platform.

FLAC vs. MP3 320 kbps

According to different forums and testimonies, FLAC is a lossless format that extracts the entire music from its album version, thereby having a massive size of almost 25 MB (more or less) per file. On the other hand, MP3 is a lossy audio format that loses several elements of the music upon extraction but keeps the main elements intact to get the same music.

On regular "gears" (headphones, earphones, IEMs, Music Players, DAPs. etc.), people would not be able to distinguish FLAC from MP3 320 kbps, but when using the right ones, it could reveal it to a trained ear. Spotify's effort to extend its music experience for FLAC lossless and HiFi would surely give Audiophiles a new platform to stream.
