Humans are preparing to move to Mars as plans are already underway to develop and create a sustainable city on the Red Planet, following the vision of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

The plans were unveiled by architecture studio ABIBOO, which has officers around the world, with two offices in the United States.

First city in Mars

The area will be developed at Tempe Mensa on Mars, with Nuwa as the capital city and one of the five cities that are being planned to be built on the Red Planet.

It will be built vertically instead of horizontally into the side of a cliff, which would diminish the effect of atmospheric pressure and radiation, the latter of which is deadly without any shelter.

ABIBOO wants to use carbon dioxide and water found on the surface of Mars in order to help create the steel that they would need to build the offices, homes and more.

The city would still have all of the mainstays of a city on Earth, including offices, homes and even green spaces. The designs for the space are based on scientific research from the SONet network and The Mars Society.

How the city will function

Alfredo Munoz, the founder of ABIBOO, told Euronews that they had to do a lot of analysis based on computing and working with scientists to understand the circumstances they will face.

People who wish to live in the city on Mars should pass it to the next generation because construction is not projected to start until 2054. The move-in will most likely happen in 2100, which is in line with what Musk said before to Inverse that a sustainable city would not happen in his lifetime, or ours for that matter.

The population of the planned city would be 250,000. The name is connected to the mythological Chinese goddess that is the proctor of Humans.

Inside the cliff is where most of the construction activity would be found, with Macro-buildings excavated inside the rock. There will also be the construction of Green-Domes, which will either act as parks for the people or as a place to grow experimental vegetation.

The main source of food in the city would come from the cultivation of the crops, which would account for half of the people's diets. Microalgae would also be an important component for people's diets, as reported by the Telegraph.

As for recreation, people will be able to participate in the same recreation that is done here on Earth, from sports to camping to arts. Getting from Earth to Mars will be very tricky for those who wish to live on the Red Planet, but it is not impossible.

A shuttle service will be able to take people between the planets, leaving every 26 months, with each trip taking anywhere from one to three months.

The cost of a one-way ticket for those emigrating to Mars will be around $300,000, but of course that may still change.

ABIBOO had presented the Nuwa proposal at the Mars Society convention in October 2020, which was attended by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, George Whitesides from Virgin Galactic, and Jim Bridenstine from NASA.

ABIBOO collaborated with the SONet network on the project while working remotely from several global destinations, according to Inhabitat.

The network includes an international team of scientists headed by astrophysicist Guillem Anglada and experts in architecture, astrophysics, space engineering, astrobiology, astrogeology, chemistry and psychology.
