Around six years ago, gaming giant Square Enix had teamed up with popular mobile and online game development company Nexon to create and release a mobile reboot of "Final Fantasy XI" MMORPG.

However, the project has been very quiet for the last several years of alleged development. With that being said, the news broke recently that the "Final Fantasy XI" mobile reboot has officially been canceled by both Nexon and Square Enix, as the project did not meet the quality that they envisioned.

Final Fantasy XI reboot announcement

In March 2015, Square Enix announced that it would create a smartphone game in collaboration with Nexon that allows you to enjoy the MMORPG "Final Fantasy XI."

The first few images of the game had leaked out in 2016. But apart from the leak, there were no other updates about the game development, as per IGN.

There was no official release date announced as well. However, according to the news, it was supposed to be developed by 2016 and slotted for release in Japan and South Korea.

Cancelation of the Final Fantasy XI reboot

"Final Fantasy XI" was considered an impressive step from the gaming company Square Enix as it made its appearance in the MMO gaming market with other titles like "Guild Wars," "Warcraft," and "Everquest."

According to Kotaku, the quality of the video game was considered at par or better than other MMORPGs. The development continued for six years when the title "Final Fantasy XI R" was also published in November 2020.

Despite having no update, it seemed that the video game development was continuing, but at the end of 2020, the South Korean media and others reported that the development was officially discontinued.

Finally, the two companies agreed that it did not meet the quality they wanted and eventually relocated their staff to other gaming projects.

The "Final Fantasy XI" reboot is officially shelved, but there is no lack of online "Final Fantasy" title that gamers can explore.

"Final Fantasy" fans may be a bit sad after the news broke out, but there is still a chance that Square Enix is creating another project to be added to the famous "Final Fantasy" franchise, according to Game Spot.

What is Final Fantasy XI about?

"Final Fantasy XI" is a multiplayer online role-playing game or MMORPG that is created and published by Square Enix. It is the 11th installment of the famous "Final Fantasy" series.

Designed and produced by Hiromichi Tanaka, it was released in Japan on May 16, 2002, for PS2 and Microsoft Windows-based PC.

The video game was the first MMORPG to offer cross-platform play between PS2 and PC. It was also the Xbox 360's first MMORPG. All versions of the video game require a monthly subscription to play.

The story of the game is set in the fantasy world of Vana'diel, where player-created avatars can both compete and cooperate in different objectives to develop numerous jobs, skills and earn in-game item rewards.

Game players can also undertake an array of quests and progress through the in-game hierarchy and game plot.
