The latest Oculus product, the Oculus Quest 2, has reportedly outsold every other Oculus headset combined. The news was reported right after a video interview with the VP of Augmented and Virtual Reality at Facebook, Andrew Bosworth.

Oculus Quest 2 sales

According to Bloomberg, when asked about virtual reality finally hitting the mainstream, Bosworth stated that it was starting to happen right now. He cited the Oculus Quest 2's sales indicating a shift from early adopters to mainstream success.

Bosworth stated that Oculus Quest 2 has already outsold not just its predecessor but all of its predecessors combined in just a few months on the market.

The Oculus Quest 2 was launched in October 2020, which means that it is currently only five months on the market.

Regardless, the cheaper, wireless head-mounted display has already outsold all of its predecessors, including the Oculus Rift, the Oculus Rift S, the Oculus Go, and the Oculus Quest.

The Oculus Quest 2 launched and immediately superseded its predecessor in technology with a higher refresh rate and resolution but dropped the base price of the 64 GB device to $299, down from $399. This was undoubtedly a move that Facebook made to make VR more accessible to mainstream users.

Oculus Quest 2 features

The Oculus Quest 2 looks similar to its predecessor, aside from the new paint job and a smaller frame. The headset's body is made of smooth white plastic, and it has no geometric patterns, just four cameras along the front corners.

The rough fabric covering the headset body is already gone, thus resulting in a more unified look, and it will make the headset easier to clean. The strap uses white fabric, as per IGN.

However, you can upgrade the strap as Oculus does sell a new Elite Strap separately, which uses a plastic halo design with a twist-to-tighten wheel that clicks the headset to size.

If you have an extra budget, it is a worthy upgrade, and there is even one with a battery pack for those that spend hours at a time using the VR.

The Oculus Quest 2 costs $299, making room-scale VR more affordable than ever. That price is for the 64GB model, and as a Quest owner, most players find the 64GB more than adequate for their usage.

If you want to load up your Quest with heavier games, movies, and other files, you may want to spring for the $399 version, which has 256GB of storage, which is twice as much as the higher-tier Quest 1.

The rest of the Quest's specs have been upgraded, too, with a per-eye resolution of 1832x1920, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2, which Qualcomm claims has twice the CPU and GPU performance of the previous headset's Snapdragon 835.

The inter-pupillary distance or IPD adjustment only has three settings instead of adjusting it millimeter by millimeter.

If you wear glasses, the Quest comes with a glasses spacer, and you still have the option of getting prescription lenses for the headset as well.
