Sony has recently revealed their total sales of Playstation 5 (PS5), a whopping 7.6 million PS5 units by Mar. 31.

The notable success of the gaming console, despite its elusiveness, was launched by Sony amid the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which may have aided it's rise to the top. According to market research group NPD's data, PS5 is now the fastest-selling console in the United States with only five months in the market.

Sony says it's keen to keep the ball rolling as it claims to continue selling more than 14.8 million PS5 consoles in its current fiscal year, which would end on Mar. 31, 2022. This figure is a drastic sum compared to PS4 sales that only went to the same number by its second year of sales.

PlayStation Gaming Console History

The PlayStation was launched in 1988 as Sony and Nintendo were working together to develop the Super Disc. At that time, Nintendo was dominating the computer gaming industry.

Sony had not yet entered the home video game market, but they were keen to make a move.

By 1991, Sony introduced a modified version of the Super Disk as part of their new gaming console invention: the Sony PlayStation. Research and development for the game console had begun in 1990 and was headed by Sony engineer Ken Kutaragi.

The new game console was revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in 1991, but the next day Nintendo announced they were going to use Philips instead. Kutaragi would be tasked with further developing the PlayStation to beat Nintendo.

Merely 200 models of the first PlayStation (that could play Super Nintendo game cartridges) were ever manufactured by Sony. The original PlayStation was designed as a multi-media and multi-purpose entertainment unit. Aside from the console being able to play Super Nintendo games, it could also process audio CDs and could read CDs with a computer and video. However, these prototypes weren't released.

Later on, Kutaragi developed games in a 3D polygon graphics format, and other versions of the console were developed and released.

From here, the PlayStation gaming console came about. From simple gameplays to complex RPGs, the game console has indeed come far.
