Square Enix just released NieR Replicant last April 22^nd to good reviews. But fans noticed something in the game that made them feel awkward; some were even downright disgusted.

That "something" is a trophy called "Daredevil," which a lot of NieR fans feel require them to objectify a character in an offensive way, reports GameRant. Out of the game's 47 total trophies, the Daredevil achievement is something that a few avid trophy hunters might think of skipping due to what you need to do to complete it.

But what is it exactly, and why are many players up in arms about it?

Pretty Crass, To Be Honest

To get Daredevil, NieR players are required to "discover the secret" of a certain character named Kaine by peeking up her clothes and looking at her private parts, writes TheGamer. Yes, you read that right. And while video games have never been strangers to controversial trophies, this one likely takes the cake.

As a result, fans blew up the internet with criticisms of the rather crass trophy, reports GameRant. Many people went to Twitter tagging NieR creators and publisher Square Enix, saying that the trophy should've been removed prior to the game's release. A few more blasted the achievement for allegedly fetishizing intersex people, since the character Kaine is also apparently an intersex individual.

Achieving the trophy in-game goes as follows. Once a player gains access to Kaine in their party, they have to find the time to angle the camera so they can see her underwear. Kaine then makes a comment and kicks the camera after. And as if this wasn't already perverted enough, you'll have to do this a total of ten times until it triggers a game over screen. Only then will you get the trophy.

NieR:Automata Fans Might Find This One Familiar

When NieR:Automata released back in February 2017, there was a trophy that's basically a clone of the NieR Replicant one. It was called "What Are You Doing?", and it instructed players to look up 2B's skirt by angling the camera the right way 10 times. Sound familiar? The only thing different with this one is that 2B doesn't comment on it and kick the camera; she just walks backwards and the viewing angle resets, according to an IGN guide.

Square Enix and NieR creator Yoko Taro has so far declined to comment on the matter.

Trophy Hunting Is A Lifestyle

For players who always look to get 100% completion in their games, they will have to get every single trophy to do so. And the effort is more or less rewarded at times. For instance, a few trophies in Bethesda's Fallout 4 give actual story clues relating to the game's main campaign.

Sometimes, collecting achievements can even earn a player real money to buy more games, like what a Sony Rewards Program tried doing in November 2017 for PlayStation. These are among the few reasons, besides pure completionism, that gamers have when they go trophy hunting. It just so happens that controversial ones such as that in NieR Replicant and NieR:Automata pop every now and then.
