Samsung and AMD team up to develop RDNA 2 graphics technology for an Exynos mobile system-on-chip--a chip predicated to boost the GPU performance in flagship Samsung smartphones.

Samsung and AMD to Create Exynos Chip

AMD described the chip as a next-generation Exynos SoC and stated that Samsung will provide further information later this year. There are no further details about the chip and about which products it will be used.

The GPU will use AMD's RDNA 2 architecture, enabling features like variable-rate shading and ray tracing. AMD noted it will make its way to flagship mobile devices, according to Computex Taipei

AMD CEO Lisa Su said that people will find RDNA 2 the next place to be the high-performance mobile phone market.

AMD has partnered with Samsung for years to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market.

Su added that they will add custom graphics IP to the next flagship mobile SoC of Samsung, including ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities, according to The Verge.

Exynos is the chip that Samsung uses for processors. In the United States, Samsung's Galaxy phones are equipped with Snapdragon SoCs from Qualcomm, but the Galaxy phones are equipped with Exynos chips in other countries.

The Exynos models are generally regarded as less performant than their Qualcomm equivalents, but it was seen as a surprise when Samsung decided to switch to the Snapdragon variant of the Galaxy S20 in South Korea.

AMD's mobile solution may give more benefits over Qualcomm's Adreno GPUs, but that is still not certain. But by mentioning features such as ray tracing and lending its RDNA 2 architecture to Exynos, AMD has shoot up the public's expectations for the performance of Samsung devices.

AMD's RDNA 2 Architecture

Aside from its Samsung partnership for Exynos chips, AMD has also announced its Radeon RX 6000M of mobile GPUs, featuring its RDNA 2 architecture.

According to PCGamers, AMD's flagship 6800M delivers the fastest AMD graphics for laptops, and it claims that the 6800M will run modern AAA games at frame rates comparable to or better than those of Nvidia's mobile RTX 3080. It is also predicted to outperform Nvidia's chip while gaming on battery.

AMD added that the RX 6700M will deliver up to 100fps in popular games at 1440 resolution. The 6600M is also better for epic 1080p gaming.

AMD has told the public to keep an eye out for independent reviews of these chips in the next couple of weeks to give them a better idea of the performance that they can expect from each one.

AMD has also announced AMD Advantage, a new design framework initiative that encourages OEMs to include certain features on their AMD-powered systems and indicates to consumers which Ryzen and Radeon powered laptops AMD thinks are the best.

The AMD Advantage is somewhat similar to the idea of Intel's Evo program, but it is just for gaming laptops, and the standards look much more stringent.
