The iPhone 12 has now officially surpassed iPhone 6 as the lineup passed 100 million sales in April. This means that the iPhone 12 achieved the record-breaking number in just seven months after it was launched.

iPhone 12 Reaches 100 Million United Sold

According to Counterpoint Research, the iPhone 12 is the fastest Apple phone that reached the 100 million mark since iPhone 6, which was released in 2014.

Counterpoint Research explained that in the iPhone 6 lineup, the sales were supported by pent-up demand for bigger screens, while for the iPhone 12 series, it was thanks to the 5G connectivity and OLED displays that the consumers were quick to buy the unit.

The impressive sales are expected to lead to record-breaking revenue for Apple, and it also gave the company a record-high market share for April, according to 9to5Mac.

Apple also has achieved a high market share in the United States since October 2020, and it is expected to continue.

According to MacRumors, consumers' preferences also changed between the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 series.

The consumers showed more interest in the iPhone 12 Pro Max, with a 29% share of sales, during the first seven months after it was released compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which had a 25% share of sales.

Change in consumer preferences is also one of the reasons why iPhone 12 grossed 22% more revenue than the iPhone 11 series in the first seven months after launch.

The sales in the United States alone accounted for 40% of the iPhone 12 Pro Max sales in April, making it the best-selling device in the United States since December 2020.

The iPhone 12 series was also less affected by the COVID-19 pandemic than the iPhone 11 series, which saw a decrease in sales as consumers focused on purchasing essentials than new devices.

In addition, a massive proportion of users who kept their previous phone because of the pandemic in 2020 upgraded to an iPhone 12 as soon as it became available, skipping iPhone 11.

Expansion of mmWave for iPhone 13

According to a report from DigiTimes, Apple is enlisting additional suppliers of mmWave antennas for the iPhone 13 as the company prepares for a busy fall season.

The 5G mmWave technology was first introduced in the iPhone 12, and mmWave offers faster speeds despite being limited in distance.

Currently, mmWave iPhone 12 models are only available in the United States, but this August, Apple is planning to expand the mmWave iPhones and distribute them to more countries around the world.

The mmWave technology has increased in adoption in cities, but with the iPhone 13 expanding the technology to more consumers, it may force countries to adopt mmWave infrastructure faster.

According to DigiTimes, Apple is planning to boost the ratio of 5G mmWave iPhones to as many as 60% of its 2021 iPhone lineup, with more than 90 million units expected to be shipped out.

The upcoming iPhone 13 is expected to be released between September and October, and it is rumored to include better features like improved display, faster performance, and improved cameras.
