Apple and Intel are currently testing their chip designs together with TSMC's 3-nanometer production technology. It will include commercial distribution of such chips, and it is expected to come out by the second half of 2022.
Apple iPad 2022
Apple iPad 2022 will most likely become the first device to be powered by processors that feature 3-nm technology, according to MacRumors. The next installment for the iPhone franchise, which would roll out in 2022, is expected to feature the intermediate 4-nm technology due to scheduling reasons.
According to the report, TSMC announced that its 3-nanometer technology could actually increase a device's processing performance by up to 15%. Compared to a 5-nanometer technology, TMSC's chip can reduce its power consumption by 25% to 30%.
If MacRumors' report is highly accurate, then it would be the second time in the last few years that Apple has launched a brand new chip technology in one of their iPads before debuting it to its flagship smartphone series.
What Chip Does Previous Apple iPads Use?
Apple is known for utilizing its recent 5-nanometer chip technology in the latest iPad Air that debuted in September 2020. It features a 6-core A14 Bionic chip that powers through tasks seamlessly.

Mac Rumors reported that Apple Inc does not typically use new chip technologies in its iPad devices before using them in iPhones, but that is precisely what occurred in 2020. The reason behind it is simple: the iPhone 12 models' release date was postponed.
As such, the iPhone 12 mini, standard, pro, and pro max all use the A14 Bionic chip.
The most recent Apple iPad Pro model that debuted in April now features the powerful M1 chip. It started to surface Apple's networks in the 2020 Apple Silicon Macs.
The M1 chip used Apple Inc's 5-nanometer architecture as its basis, as the iPad Air and iPhone 12 series.
Apple's 3-Nanometer Chip Technology
Regardless of whether Apple Inc pushes through with debuting its next-generation 3nm chip technology in the coming iPad Air and iPad Pro, it will come sooner or later.
However, it seems highly likely because the timing seems to be in favor of the iPad Pro.
We all know that Apple usually updates its iPad Pro every 12 to 18 months, and after that period, we can start seeing a new model in the second half of 2022.
If it happens, it will put Apple's iPad Pro closer to the time frame that MacRumors reported for the commercial launch of a 3nm chip. It is also mentioned that the production of the next-gen iPad Air, which will feature an OLED display, might start in the fourth quarter of 2021 and debut in early 2022.
