Porsche is recalling around 43,000 units of its Taycan electric vehicle (EV) due to a software issue that causes the car to suddenly lose power.

The Taycan is Porsche's first ever EV.

In a statement posted on its official website, Porsche said that the company is "reviewing and updating the software for the power electronics and the engine control unit on approximately 43,000 units of Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo vehicles." The review and update will involve units part of the 2020 to 2021 model years.

Porsche Taycan Recall: NHTSA Complaints

Porsche Taycan owners have been lodging complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA, according to a report by The Verge. The NHTSA eventually opened a probe in response to the complaints.

The NHTSA probe discovered that the power loss issue is caused by the 12-volt battery running out of charge. The 12-volt battery is responsible for powering the accessories of the EV when it is not in motion.

"If the 12-volt battery dies while a Taycan is in motion, it can shut off the much larger 800-volt battery pack," according to the report. The large battery pack is responsible for the power being used by the car's electric motors.
