Zebra Med Ushers New Era with First-Ever AI CPT Code for Radiology

Bringing the future of AI-based reimbursement in radiology, Zebra Medical Vision reveals that it has already received the first-ever AI CPT code.

Zebra Medical Vision, a leader in medical imaging analytics, successfully gained approval for a Category III Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code application that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to aid in VCF detection as incidental findings in chest CT. This is the first of its kind in the industry and the first AI-driven CPT code specific for the field of radiology - the approval being granted by none other than the American Medical Association (AMA).

The Far-Reaching Potential of the Zebra Med CPT Code

In a press release from Zebra Medical Vision, they shared that the industry-first CPT III code was submitted to the CPT Editorial Panel of the AMA by the premier radiology organizations in the United States and North America. The American College of Radiology, together with the Radiological Society of North America, the American Roentgen Ray Society, and the Association of University Radiology, and the Association of University Radiology.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), almost half of all women and a quarter of men beyond 50 years of age are projected to suffer from an osteoporotic fracture within their lifetime. Furthermore, there's an average of 2 million cases of broken bones in the United States alone - costing about $52 billion each year. What's worse, about three-quarters of these projected cases will remain undetected. With the AI-driven CPT III code from Zebra Medical Vision, screening processes now have better rates of detecting these cases. With it, it increases the number of patients who can receive the proper treatment without the need for additional staff, imaging procedures, or radiation exposure.

Zebra Medical Vision has been augmenting sites that maintain fracture-prevention or population management programs, with its platform allowing patients to be onboarded to these programs through a seamless process and preparing them for additional screening and treatment procedures. With the new AMA-approved CPT III code, clinics will soon be able to implement the AI-driven application, identifying more patients at risk of potential osteoporotic fractures.
