AMD RX 6600 XT Launch Imminent, If Recent Filings Are To Be Believed

AMD is due to release their newest competitor to the RTX 3000 series if a recent certification filing is accurate.

The long-rumored Radeon RX 6600 XT, a mid-range graphics card in AMD's popular RDNA2 line of GPUs, has apparently been filed for certification before the National Radio Research Agency (RRA) in Korea, writes Tom's Hardware. The filing was made by PC Partner, which is a computer parts retailer.

If the filing is accurate, then it looks like AMD is going for NVIDIA's jugular at the mid-range market, where no RTX 3000 cards are priced competitively for the performance they offer. One could try to make an argument about the RTX 3060, but considering its current street pricing, it's no compelling deal by a longshot.

Furthermore, WCCFTech reports that the apparent launch date for the new RX 6600 XT from AMD is August of this year, at an MSRP of $399. Various claims say that the upcoming mid-range graphics card is on par with NVIDIA's four-year-old GTX 1080 Ti from the Pascal line, a former high-end part.

The RX 6600 XT has been rumored to come for quite some time now, with the most recent reports always coupling it with a lower-tiered non-T variant. There's not a lot of officially confirmed specs for the cards right now, so what follows is mere speculation until AMD formally announces the products.

AMD RX 6600 XT: What's Under the Hood?

Tom's Hardware reported about allegedly leaked screenshots from GPU-Z of the RX 6600 XT's specs. And they're not too shabby if the leak is to be believed.

The card features 8 GB of GDDR6 memory on a 128-bit bus, PCIe Gen 4 support, and clock speeds of 1869 MHz (base) and 2679 MHz (boost) on the aforementioned Navi 23 chip. It also has 32 compute units (CUs), equalling 2048 stream processors and ray-tracing capabilities.

Should AMD decide to release the RX 6600 XT next month, they'll be doing it at a relatively better time in terms of GPU pricing. That's because graphics card price drops have kept on coming for the past few weeks, which suggests that the silicon shortage is easing, even for a little bit.

RTX 3060 Competition

If the rumors are true that the RX 6600 XT matches the GTX 1080 Ti in performance, then it would go straight up against the RTX 3060. But in order to take the performance crown, it has to offer a lot more performance for the price (assuming that the card releases at MSRP and stays there).

The alleged $399 MSRP might put a damper on the potential of the 6600 XT is a mid-range offering, and that's not even considering the potential markups in price caused by the current status of the GPU market. Here's hoping that it will all turn out well, though, since the market is improving.
