Netflix first proved that big original series can succeed on streaming networks without any need for cable. Now, following a stellar performance at the Golden Globes, Amazon is taking things to the next level: the streaming service already has a selection of great originals to watch, but its newest project may be the most impressive yet.

For decades, Woody Allen has been an iconic writer and director. He's the man behind some of the funniest, quirkiest comedies to ever come out of Hollywood, and despite turning 79 late last year, Allen has yet to quit the business. In fact, Allen and Amazon are teaming up...for a TV series.

That's right: the acclaimed, Oscar-winning director is finally making the move to television. The Untitled Woody Allen Project (a working title that Allen uses for all of his projects) will be both written and directed by Allen, while Amazon Studios will distribute the series throughout the U.S., the U.K. and Germany.

On top of everything, the show won't even go through the traditional pilot phase, as Amazon has already ordered a full season of Allen's new show. Then again, considering the director's reputation, maybe a full season order isn't that surprising.

Speaking with Variety, Vice President of Amazon Studios Roy Price said:

"Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all time, and it's an honor to be working with him on his first television series...From 'Annie Hall' to 'Blue Jasmine,' Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn't be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year."

Of course, Mr. Allen chimed in as well:

"I don't know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I'm not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this."

The Untitled Woody Allen Project will make its way to Prime Instant Video sometime next year.
