Warner Bros. Games announced that Mortal Kombat 11, the latest entry in the longstanding franchise started by NetherRealm Studios, has crossed 12 million unit sales worldwide.

The new achievement not only shows the popularity of the latest Mortal Kombat game, but the persisting fame of the multi-platform fighting game. Ever since the first Mortal Kombat game was released in 1992, the entire franchise has already sold more than 73 million copies to date, not to mention its three theatrical films, animated movies, and television adaptations. On top of these figures, Mortal Kombat Mobile — the Android and iOS port of the Mortal Kombat X game — has garnered more than 138 million installs, with millions of players actively playing the game across both the mobile and console platforms.

"When Mortal Kombat launched nearly 30 years ago, I never dreamed it would grow into the franchise it is today with more than 73 million games sold," said Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm Studios creative director. "We have some of the most passionate fans in the world and we appreciate the support they have shown us over the years."

The Latest in the Mortal Kombat Universe

Mortal Kombat 11 marks the latest iteration of the iconic franchise, a sequel following Mortal Kombat X back in 2015. A 2.5D fighting game, the game runs on a modified game system based on the Unreal Engine 3. The game initially had 25 base characters plus 12 characters from various downloadable content (DLC) released after. Its current roster also includes pop culture icons like Todd McFarlane's Spawn, John Rambo (bearing the likeness of Sylvester Stallone from the Rambo movies), The Terminator (with the likeness of Arnold Schwarzenegger from the movie franchise of the same name), and more.

The latest MK installment is currently available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 4 Pro; Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One; Nintendo Switch, PC, and Google Stadia. First launched in April 2019, Mortal Kombat has become the franchise's fastest selling title. Its latest edition, Mortal Kombat Ultimate, released November 2020, offers an expanded version of the hit MK 11, which received honors such as the Fighting Game of the Year at the 23rd 24th D.I.C.E. Awards by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Science, as well as the Best Fighting Game of 2019 by IGN.
