Twitter is now jumping into the eCommerce space, testing a new shopping feature that would allow brands to post their products at the top of their profiles for their followers to check out and purchase.

The new feature from the microblogging giant is expected to create a new wave across blogs already on the Internet, creating a new segment for connecting sellers and buyers. Twitter will be leveraging its massive social media platform in reaching customers and collecting first-party data.

With the new shopping capabilities, Twitter will be helping expand social media not only as a means of determining shopping behavior - now empowered to gather data in new and innovative ways, as well as promoting products directly to followers.

Meet the Twitter Shop Module

According to a Twitter blog released last July 28, the new feature is currently named the "Shop Module," which is described as a dedicated space on the top of a Twitter profile - a space for businesses to showcase their products. When users visit a profile with its Shop Module enabled, the page offers a carousel of products. Tapping on one of the items offers more information about that particular product and the option to directly purchase the item - a seamless experience in the in-app browser, without the need to leave Twitter.

The new project is starting with a few brands in the United States. This allows people in the United States to use Twitter in English through their iOS devices to see the Shop Module from participating brands.

"We believe in the power of the conversations that Twitter facilitates around products," writes Goldbird Product Lead Bruce Falck on the Twitter blog. "With this pilot, we'll get to explore how our engaged, responsive and chatty audience reacts to products that are emotionally charged -- like a new jersey from your favorite sports team -- or that provide lasting impact -- like a new skincare regimen."

Falck adds that with the new partnership, Twitter hopes to more easily address the needs of businesses of any size or vertical in their product innovation.

The new Shop Module is the latest move in Twitter's attempt to better support businesses on its platform. It builds upon and follows its Professional Profiles, which it released back in April. The new profile layout allows creators, nonprofits, businesses, and publishers for "anyone who uses Twitter for work," allowing them to display more relevant features on their profile.

About Twitter

Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) is a microblogging and social networking service where users interact with short-form "tweets," where registered users can post, repost (or retweet), and like posts while unregistered users can only view them. Originally released in July 2006, it has 199 million monetizable daily active users around the world, according to the online statistics platform Statista, with more than 73 million of its users coming from the United States alone.

It has consistently ranked among the most-visited websites, being called the "SMS of the Internet'' back in 2013. By the first quarter of 2019, it has logged more than 330 million monthly active users.
