T-Mobile has started its "very limited pilot" program that offers fiber home internet to select locations in New York City.

The limited rollout follows the company's fixed wireless offering, which was made available to customers last April.

T-Mobile's limited pilot program offers fiber home internet to certain locations in New York City. You are probably wondering what these locations may be. These NYC locations are "certain residential buildings in Manhattan," according to a report by The Verge.

Manhattan residents can check the availability of the T-Mobile fiber optic home internet service via the website dedicated to the service.

T-Mobile's limited fiber internet service runs the fiber lines of a local provider and not a new fiber network, per the report.

According to The Verge, "it's not clear how big of a role T-Mobile thinks fiber could play in its home internet plans, but it certainly seems to think it's worth testing the waters."

Not many details about T-Mobile's fiber optic home internet are available as of writing. Its official website offers a little insight on what Manhattan residents can expect from the service.

According to the T-Mobile Fiber website, the service comes with a Wi-Fi 6 router and no annual contracts. The latter means that you can cancel the fiber optic home internet service anytime.

More importantly, T-Mobile Fiber's users can expect upload and download speeds at 940Mbps with no data caps.

According to the report by The Verge, a company representative said that more details will be made available should the service become more widely available.

For the majority of the residents in the United States who are yet to have access to T-Mobile's fiber optic home internet service, there is still T-Mobile's 5G network and plans.

In a recent report published by independent research firm umlaut, T-Mobile topped the 5G network rankings when it comes to internet reliability, coverage, and speed. Other wireless network providers included in the report are Verizon and AT&T.

Back in April, T-Mobile also announced that its 5G speeds would average from 50Mbps to 100 Mbps.

What is Fiber Optic Internet?

While T-Mobile's 5G network does not sound bad at all, it is no surprise if consumers would prefer the T-Mobile fiber and its 940 Mbps upload and download speeds. But what exactly is fiber optic internet?

CenturyLink defines fiber optic internet, also simply known as fiber, as "a broadband connection that can reach speeds of up to 940 Megabits per second (Mbps), with low lag time." A fiber-optic cable is used for this kind of internet, which CenturyLink says can send data as fast 70% of the speed of light.
