An Indian orthopedic surgeon has used Google Glass to successfully perform a foot and ankle surgery in the city of Jaipur, India.

Selen G. Parekh, a U.S. based doctor, supervised his team and conducted the operation on Saturday, January 11, which was also broadcasted live on Google. The foot and ankle surgery was performed during a three-day annual Indo-US conference, which was attended by a team of experts from the U.S. and headed by Dr. Ashish Sharma.

Sharma says that Google Glass helped doctors perform surgeries and allowed them to look at medical reports such as an X-Ray or MRI without taking their eyes off from the patient. Google Glass also assisted doctors to communicate with the patient's family or friends during the operation.

Sharma said Google Glass is an "amazing technology." The image that a doctor saw through Google Glass could be broadcasted on the Internet, which may be used to assist new doctors understand and learn surgical procedure without the need of being present in the operation theater. Earlier, doctors had to move and make space for other doctors to learn and for cameramen to record from different angles during surgeries, which carried the high risk of spreading infection. However, with the help of Google Glass, doctors can now perform surgeries without any interruptions or concerns.

Google Glass may revolutionize the way surgeries are conducted and may become an important tool for aspiring doctors to learn the minute details while sitting in any part of the world.

In September 2013, a doctor in the city of Chennai became the first Indian to perform a surgery wearing the Google Glass. He operated on a 45-year old patient for upper gastro-intestinal laparoscopy procedure and streamed it live to medical students who were not present at the operation theater.

Google launched its wearable technology device, Google Glass, in early 2013. The company recently released the Explorer Edition of the Google Glass, which is meant only for developers, and is planning to release the consumer version of the Google Glass sometime in 2014.

Google Glass has a frame, which is very similar to the traditional spectacles. However, users can give voice commands to the gadget and take pictures as well as videos to show their own viewpoint.
