During the Christmas season, it is common for people and organizations to raise funds for charitable causes from childrens' welfare to homelessness support. This year, there is an ongoing initiative to raise funds for shelter animals that is being organized, surprisingly, by two meme tokens.

As per the official announcement, Dinger and Pawthreum are teaming up to match donations of up to $25,000 that go towards Cat Town Oakland.

All About the Animals

Dinger is the native token of the Schrodinger token ecosystem and features a cat as its official mascot. Pawthreum is also pet-inspired and together, the two tokens are trying to be a force for good and are working to support one of the leading shelters for animal welfare in the US.

Cat Town Oakland's mission is to reduce the kill rate of shelter animals and to find a home for the often-overlooked pets.

"Cat Town's mission is to transform the approach to saving shelter cats, reducing euthanasia nationwide. Our focus is to find great homes for cats who are considered unadoptable in the traditional rescue model," says its management. So far, the organization has been successful, bringing down the kill rate at Oakland Animal Services since 2011 by more than 70%.

With this new initiative, Dinger and Pawthereum plan to support Cat City Oakland even more.

The Fundraiser

Both Dinger and Pawthereum have announced that they will match donations of up to $25,000 to Cat City Oakland. Dinger will match donations of up to $15,000 and Pawthreum will match donations of up to $10,000. These funds will help Cat City Oakland to continue in the work that they do and will greatly contribute to animal welfare.

This initiative also speaks to the changing narrative around meme tokens and what they represent. Many of us are familiar with popular meme tokens like Dogecoin and Shiba. These tokens are based on popular internet memes, pop culture references, or animals. They use these things as their names and mascots and thanks to a combination of internet culture and the convenience of cryptocurrency, many of them have seen great success in the market.

At the same time, meme tokens run the risk of being written off as nothing more than a joke or as a fad that will wear out. Both Pawthrereum and Dinger have expressed a desire to go against the stereotype and show that meme tokens have a practical value and mission. With this initiative with Cat Town Oakland, they are showing how meme tokens' power can be leveraged for good.

In Pawthereum's case, giving back is a part of its core purpose. "Pawthereum is a decentralized community-run charity cryptocurrency that aims to help animal charities and shelters all over the world," its management says.

The next crop of meme tokens can be expected to be more socially conscious and responsible and also to defy the stereotype of meme tokens being nothing but internet fads.
