NOAA is now warning about another above-normal Atlantic hurricane season this 2022. If the scientific agency's predictions are correct, this would the 7th consecutive above-average hurricane season.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that the Atlantic hurricane season 2022 is expected to start around June 1 until Nov. 30. 

"The increased activity anticipated this hurricane season is attributed to several climate factors, including the ongoing La Niña that is likely to persist throughout the hurricane season," said NOAA via ABC News. 

NOAA Warns About New Above-Normal Atlantic Hurricane Season

Aside from the La Niña, the regulatory agency also said that the weaker tropical Atlantic trade winds, warmer sea surface temperatures in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, as well and enhanced west African monsoon, are all affecting the hurricane season. 

When it comes to the actual storms, NOAA said that there could a total of 10 storms during the Atlantic hurricane season. 

Around three to six of them could reach category 3, category 4, and even category 5. The agency added that above-average hurricanes will have a 65% chance of happening. 

Meanwhile, near-normal storms are expected to have a 25% chance of happening and a 10% chance of below-normal hurricanes.  

Efforts Made by NOAA 

NOAA's official press release post that it will make more advanced efforts so that they can observe the Atlantic hurricane season more efficiently. 
Some of their activities include the following: 

• Using Saildrone uncrewed surface vehicles once the Atlantic hurricane season, especially at the environmental event's peak. 
• On the other hand, the Excessive Rainfall Outlook (ERO) will soon be extended to five days. 
• NOAA will also use the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecast Modeling System and Hurricanes in a Multi-scale Ocean-coupled Non-hydrostatic model.
