From 3G to 4G until 5G connectivity. Now, the so-called quantum internet is expected to be faster than any type of WiFi connectivity existing on the planet.

Although it will take years before this tech is completed, a major breakthrough was achieved by some researchers of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, QuTech, and Delft University of Technology.

They shared their findings in the new study "Qubit teleportation between non-neighbouring nodes in a quantum network," which was published by the Nature journal on May 25.

According to Independent UK's latest report, the group of scientists was able to teleport quantum information between two nodes of a network.

Remember, these nodes are not really connected with one another. This is a major breakthrough since most experiments involving quantum internet only demonstrated data transmission via connected nodes.

Because of this, experts hope that this achievement will be followed up by more breakthroughs, allowing them to build the quantum internet.

"This achievement is not only a win for fundamental science, but also represents an advance in the real-world problem solving required to move this fascinating quantum application to the next step," said leading authors Oliver Slattery and Yong-Su Kim.

Although the latest quantum breakthrough is quite astounding, more robust systems, as well as new interfaces are needed if experts want to complete the so-called quantum internet.

How Fast is Quantum Internet?

Various government departments and independent agencies have been making efforts just to make the quantum internet a reality. One of them is the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE).

U.S. DoE previously published a blueprint explaining how quantum internet can be achieved. On the other hand, the document also explained how fast this internet connectivity can really be once it is completed.

Experts estimated that quantum connectivity can transmit data at the speed of light, which is hundreds of thousands of miles per second. Just imagine using online apps and other websites with this internet speed.
