Microsoft Word web app will be having a dark more feature.

The roadmap entry released by Microsoft states that users who use the web app will now be able to enjoy the dark more feature.

"Dark Mode in Word for Web will provide a modern look for documents while giving users the ability to reduce eye strains and accommodate light sensitivity from long hours at a computer screen," Microsoft stated.

The roadmap didn't detail anything about how users can implement the feature, though. However, details will soon resurface once the feature is officially accessible on the web app.

Although the feature is still in development, its general availability is in May 2022. This could mean two things: the rollout of the feature is imminent or the release timeframe is a bit longer than what they stated.

Microsoft has started working towards the dark mode support for its Office Suite apps long ago. And so far, the tech giant has rolled out the feature to popular Office apps on multiple platforms.

Is Dark Mode Really Good for Your Eyes?

The move to introduce a dark mode feature to the app (and other apps) is to help remove eye strain. However, there have been many speculations about dark mode-is it really good for the eyes?

Truthfully, one of the main reasons dark mode is so popular these days is primarily because of its aesthetics. Many users really think that the dark mode looks so much better compared to light mode.

In fact, Spotify chose a dark background as its standard mode following testing of different designs on its users. "We believe that when you have music or art that's very colorful and very artistic, and you have beautiful cover art for music, that it really shows more clearly visible in a product like this, when it's about entertainment," said Michelle Kadir, the director of product development at Spotify

Beyond style, the widespread roll-out or dark mode has also triggered dubious claims about its proposed benefits that it helps with eye strain, concentration, and battery life.

A 2018 study on Digital Eye Strain (DES) showed that its prevalence might be as high as 50 percent or more among computer users. However, Anne Cox, a professor of human-computer interaction at UCL said, "I'm not aware of any robust evidence that white text on black background reduces eye strain."

Still, for many experts, the best solution to resolve eye strain is to rally take the time to get away from computers and devices for a significant amount of time. This means limiting screen time or using the 20-20-20 rule in which every 20 minutes you look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
