NuID, a company developing identity and authentication solutions, is helping bridge the web2 to web3 gap by building the web's missing identity layer. NuID's inception began with an enterprise and developer-facing solution to offer trustless login security to NuID's customers. 

NuID's seamless API allows web platforms to use trustless authentication for logins by leveraging zero-knowledge proofs. "Essentially, the authentication protocol prevents login credentials from leaving a user's device so they are not being stored server-side, so individuals retain ownership of those credentials. That's the power of zero-knowledge proofs," shared Brand Director Carlyle Brown. 

The authentication solution offers a bridge from web2 to web3 by moving authentication methods from a centralized identity model (service-specific user credentials managed by a service), to a decentralized identity model: persistent, immutable credentials stored on a public blockchain.

NuID still provides the API service for custom and self-deployments and is building upon that existing infrastructure to develop the broader Nu Identity Ecosystem. 

The Nu Identity Ecosystem

The Nu Identity Ecosystem will enable a new model of digital identity for individuals and services. Individuals will represent their identities with their zero-knowledge authentication credentials, stored on a public blockchain, and services will deploy the NuID trustless authentication solution. 

In future ecosystem use-cases, individuals will be able to own, share, and securely store any type of identifying information that can be stored online: KYC and identity verification, certificate and credential issuance, healthcare records, digitized assets, education credentials, decentralized data storage, and peer-to-peer identity services.

"A user will be able to carry their credentials to different services within the ecosystem much like we transport physical credentials in the physical world. Participants in the ecosystem can have their credentials verified by other participants, and equally, issue credentials to other participants," shared VP of Business Development Ibrahim Pataudi.

What NuID's Ecosystem Solves

The Nu Identity Ecosystem provides the internet with a much needed identity layer. Online personal identity data has been entrusted to organizations in possession of information like passwords, credit scores, social security numbers, and medical information. All too often, individuals are alerted to data breaches and have to change passwords, freeze their credit, or do damage control to prevent further exploitation of their data. The detriments of the current model of identity reach far beyond the obvious security issues: think of the current inconvenience and cost of having medical records, school transcripts, or other sensitive information transferred from one organization to another. 

NuID's ecosystem will put this data back into the hands of the individual. Why is this important? It creates an infrastructure of portable, user-owned data that enables self-sovereign identity & relinquishes enterprises from the security and development burdens of storing this data. 

The Process

Users' personal data will be device-agnostic and stored in a decentralized fashion. "Users will 'bring their own identity' to different services since they are the explicit owners of their credentials. With user-friendly access to modern cryptography, everyone can be a citizen of the new internet ecosystem," says CEO Locke Brown. 

As part of ecosystem development, NuID is also partnering with The Kii Foundation to develop an identity-optimized ledger, the KiiChain, and launch the associated utility token Kii. Look out for announcements over this summer to be a part of the ecosystem.
