Rivian's future Wind Turbine in its manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, seeks to charge its brand new R1 electric vehicles (EVs) for the first time before it starts shipping to its owners.

It appears that Rivian wants to take its clean energy efforts to the next level. It plans to build a wind turbine, which will tower over the east side of its Normal auto plant once it is finally finished.
Rivian's Wind Turbine
As per a news story by Electrek, the EV maker Rivian joined forces with Apex Clean Energy, an renewable energy firm in Charlottesville, Virginia, to work on its wind turbine project.
The news outlet notes in the same report that the future wind turbine on the manufacturing plant of Rivian could generate up to a whopping 10 million kilowatt-hours in merely a single year.
Rivian is still waiting for the government approval in the town of Normal before it proceeds with its plans, according to a recent report by Heart of Illinois ABC. And the decision should be out by next month or in July.

The permit application of Rivian to the government exposed some of the explicit details of the proposed wind turbine.
It should be about 510 feet tall, and white color covers its body. The carmaker also highlighted that it sports non-reflective blades, and it is going to be as quiet as it can.
Rivian gives specifics about its estimated sound output. The proposed wind turbine should range from 35 decibels to 42 decibels.
Simply put, the EV maker touts it to be as loud as a typical refrigerator, which does not make that much sound in this day and age -- or we just got used to it.

Electrek did the math, and it turns out that the proposed wind turbine of the carmaker could light up roughly 890 houses in homes in the United States.

Besides its power output, Rivian estimates that the wind turbine avoids CO2 emissions at about 177,000 tons.
The Director of Renewable Energy at Rivian, Andrew Peterman, says that "to us, our job isn't done when our vehicles come off the line,"
The Rivian exec adds: "we're also pushing to accelerate the shift to carbon-free electricity for all," apart from merely electrifying vehicles.
Peterman claims that "this wind turbine is an early step on that path. Not to mention that, he says that Rivian believes that "it's also a beacon of our vision for a clean energy future."
